Dionysos-Penteli: a walk to the ancient marble quarry

This is a very surprising walk on the northern slopes of Mt. Penteli, famous for its Penteli Marble.

  • enjoy dense forest and views as far as Lake Marathon
  • walk past 3 churches in the countryside
  • visit the ancient marble quarry turned into an open air museum
  • have a day outing for 3.95 Euro only per family or group of friends

The walk leads you through one of the last patches of dense forest that exists on Penteli mountain. A real treat for the eyes and the lungs! You will pass by 3 small churches, the open air old marble mines & kastro and another open air museum with modern marble sculptures. These museums both have free entrance. Heading towards the end of the walk, there is a nice cafe, so all ingredients for a great, sportive outing are included in this self-guided activity in Attica.

After booking this self-guided day trip, you will be connected to this walk in our app, so you can easily navigate and read about history and more.

  • Follow the driving instructions to the starting point included in our app
  • The starting point is also accessible by public bus

Roundwalk from Dionysos

  • The walk is about 6km and lasts 3 hours including the stops at the churches & things to see.
  • Because the path is stony and the elevation gain is 270m, one needs to be reasonably fit.
  • We recommend good walking shoes or boots.
  • Take picnic lunch & water bottle.
  • Don't forget to bring your camera and/or smart phone
